From October 6th to 8th, we attended the AATCC Discovery Summit in Savannah. Madi presented her poster titled 'Slicing Sugars: Enzymatic Deglycosylation of Weld Dyestuff Toward Sustainable Textile Dyeing,' and Michele shared her presentation on 'Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Dyeing of Hydrophobic Fibers Using the Natural Dye Alizarin.'
It was a conference full of learning, reconnecting with friends, and discussing sustainable options for the textile industry. Congratulations to the event organizers, and we’re already looking forward to next year! @aatcc_

Unforgettable moments at Techtextil North America, held August 20-22 in Raleigh! 🌟 This event brought together all facets of the technical textile industry — from research and development to raw materials and production.

At this event, student Michele presented her groundbreaking work on "Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Dyeing of Polyester Using Natural Dyes from the Madder Plant" through an oral presentation and a poster session.

🧪✨ Fall 2024 Lab Retreat Recap! 🧪✨

We just wrapped up an incredible 2-day retreat filled with reflection, learning, and some much-needed fun! 🤩

Day 1 was all about professional growth—we took a deep dive into who we are as researchers and set some actionable goals to get us one step closer to the scientists we aspire to be. We also had some focused writing sessions, planned out future manuscripts, and even had a #ChemDraw refresher. The day ended on a high note at #RTP180—an inspiring event full of color and insights!💡

Day 2 was all about team bonding! We unleashed our competitive sides at the go-kart track 🏎️🏁—and let’s just say, we’ve got some speed demons in the lab! But in the end, it was all fun and games, and we’re back feeling more connected and energized than ever.

Here’s to growing together, both in and out of the lab!🥼

One of our high school students helped us confirm a success!

1. Our modified dye is yellow when a protecting group is attached, even in the presence of basic pH (see right test tube). It changes color if the protecting group is removed and the dye is exposed to a basic pH (since the free hydroxyl/OH group can ionize or change to O- in solution)—see left test tube.

2. We collected a sample of deprotected dye using vacuum filtration.

3. From #thinlayerchromatography (aka #TLC) analysis, we see the dye with the protecting group intact (see left 2 spots) is in a different location than the deprotected dye (see rightmost spot). TLC works by separating dyes based on their polarities. We expected different polarities for the protected vs. deprotected dye, so they appear in different locations. We looked at the TLC plate using UV light since the dyes will also absorb in the UV region.

4. Collected deprotected dye (on top). Notice the beautiful yellow-orange color! 💛🧡

We will confirm these findings with a more robust method, such as #massspectrometry, for structural analysis!

If you’re not familiar with these wolves, they are printed using a special pigment. The pigment used undergoes a structural change upon heating (hence the color change). This structural change is reversible, so the wolves are red under cool conditions and yellow under hot conditions.

Between June 4 and 7, we had the privilege of attending the BioColours Conference held at the University of Helsinki, Finland.
🌱 The conference focused on natural and bio-based colorants with the theme of a Sustainable Value Chain for Color.
💚 Dr. Williams presented on the “Derivatization of natural dye Emodin for utility for fiber coloration.” Michele presented on the "Supercritical carbon dioxide dyeing of hydrophobic fibers using the natural dye alizarin", and Jawad presented a poster about "Digital printing of textiles using biobased dyes".
💡The conference was filled with amazing and inspiring talks, providing us with incredible insights and excellent networking opportunities.
